What’s Your Point?

Clear, direct writing requires a clear idea of what you want to say. The same axiom applies to speeches; listeners can remember three key points, no more. If you wrap those points in a story, they’ll remember more of the details. While it sounds basic, clarity can be a difficult thing to achieve.

Write Now! Tips

Writing is like painting, sometimes you need to step back from the work to see it clearly. As you write, dig in and examine each sentence:

  • What EXACTLY am I saying? What’s my point?
  • If I knew nothing about the situation being described, does the essay give me all the information I need?
  • Could it be said better with fewer words?
